Hatred. Turmoil. Chaos. Destruction.

Pain.

That was Earth. That was our world... or what is left of it.

Humans know nothing but how to create and tear down. Make and break. Grow and burn. Our planet, that which has sustained our pitiful race for centuries, was on the edge of complete destitution when we finally recognised the error in our wasteful ways, sucking nature dry of its rich but limited bounty. Eventually, replenishing and renewable sources for food were developed, the true extent of solar powering was tapped into with the advent of solar power plants and solar satellites. Forests, long since cut down for the myriad uses of lumber, were slowly regrowing. Rivers, long since bled dry from our insatiable thirst, began to flow again. Humanity was slowly entering a utopian era.

But it was not to be. Space exploration, a budding, young enterprise at the time, discovered that objects of immense size were hurtling towards our planet at extreme speeds. It was as if, one zealous cult leader suggested, god was angry at being cheated, that he created humans as imperfect and now they had overcome their imperfection. In the next few years, mankind would realise he was not too far from the truth.

Five years after that fateful discovery, the objects arrived in our solar system. They were impossibly huge, elongated, and bristling with hundreds of weapons straight out of science fiction. Alien ships. Panic took hold of us humans. Self-preservation was the first thing in everyone's minds as they fought for places in the limited spaces in the colonizing ships which were near completion ever since the possibility of inhabiting other planets became a viable option. Governments turned on allies. Neighbour turned on friend. Anarchy reigned. Without the aliens even doing anything, all the progress humanity made slowly crumbled before the watchful eyes of the huge motherships. If we were not so selfish, if we were not so afraid of death, perhaps we would have had the insight to make contact with a foreign species. To negotiate. Diplomatically consult. Then we would have realised the very ships that caused countries to launch missiles at one another in the desperate frenzy for those valuable spaces aboard the colony ships, were empty. That there was no sentient life on board. They were abandoned and broken, remnants from a colossal clash of opposing fleets. The scientific potential would've been staggering. Instead, two years later, the ragged remnants of the human race huddled miserably on the colony ships as they took off in the opposite direction of the scuttled alien warships, leaving behind more miserable men and women. Men and women that were angry. That anger would slowly turn to hate. They would seek revenge.

We thrive on pain. This reliance on destruction to survive led to the downfall of the Earth, but our race's brightest minds combined their efforts in a heart-stopping attempt to save a race that should've destroyed itself. They succeeded. The end of the 21st century was the end of Earth... and a new beginning for mankind.

Lightyears were covered over the years as each mothership, bearing enough resource and human cargo to sustain life in the harshest climates, seperated, each heading for a potential planet that would suit human life. The early years, how hopeful they had seemed. So much happiness, so much change, so much to do to maintain the ship, maintain a course, ensure resources did not dwindle too quickly. Then the alien attacks began. Small and fast, these scouts were dashed to pieces against the motherships. The attacks slowly grew in size and intensity, and militant factions had to form in the human ships to deter these skirmishers. Power formed and unbalanced. Divisions formed between those who wanted to try communicate and the xenophobic commanders. Further divisions occured between those that wanted to get to the nearest planet possible, no matter the suitability for life, and those that wanted the perfect planet, a second Earth. Slowly, each ship tore itself apart internally while the implacable aliens remained near, waiting for the time to strike.

The loneliness and complete emptiness of space slowly pervaded each mothership, chilling those inside to the bone. Suspicions formed against the other motherships. Surely, one thought, the others must have found a planet. Surely they have the technology to pinpoint our position once their colony ship unpacks. Surely, we should have received help. But none came.

I don't want to finish it. Anyone else can pick up where I've left off if you think it's worth continuing.

We could perhaps use this area to both track individual story tracks / ideas / content as well as boost EV's visibility?

I go here quite a bit, maybe its yet another way to get more people interested from an external source.

I don't, I can check into it for you, but if you check out that section there is a ton of stuff on games there. One would only have to google the name if it ever became popular or noticed :P
